Canadian Army exercise in Geraldton area

February 25, 2020 – London, Ontario – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces

The public should be advised that approximately 200 soldiers from the 4th Canadian Division’s 31 Canadian Brigade Group will be conducting a military exercise until March 11, 2020.

NOREX is a 4th Canadian Division’s (4 Cdn Div) exercise which takes place in Canada’s North. Approximately 150 soldiers are deploying to the Geraldton, Ontario area with the intent to demonstrate the 4th Canadian Division Arctic Response Company Group (ARCG)’s capabilities in remote locations.

Soldiers will also engage local leadership and citizen groups in a cooperative and supportive presence operation, in order to foster the lines of communication required to respond to crises in Northern communities.

To forge new relationships and reinforce existing ones, the ARCG will deploy alongside the 3rd Canadian Ranger Patrol Group (3 CRPG) in an effort to reinforce a sense of partnership within multiple communities.

Throughout the exercise, soldiers will practice skills including operating survival and communications equipment, conducting patrols in an austere environment, and conducting outreach in local communities.

During this time, residents can expect to see various military vehicles and personnel in areas including the Municipality of Greenstone, Marten Falls, Aroland, Nakina, Beardmore and Long Lake. They will carry only predator control weapons for defence against wildlife.

Citizens are encouraged to say hello and engage our soldiers. Motorists and pedestrians are asked to use caution when approaching and when in the vicinity of military vehicles, and the Canadian Armed Forces thanks citizens and drivers for their caution and patience while our members and equipment travel on provincial highways. Everyone can follow the exercise by using the hashtag #NOREX20 on social media.
