Household Hazardous Waste Collection
The Municipality operates Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Depots during July & August at the Geraldton and Longlac landfill sites, as permitted by the Ministry of Environment. The depots will be accessible during regular landfill operating hours - the opening date will be advertised in June.
Hazardous materials that are not accepted at the depots can be brought to the HHW Events scheduled for SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2017. The events are hosted in partnership with GFL Environmental Corp. for proper handling of waste materials. On this date, GFL will set up at the Longlac Landfill during the morning, and during the afternoon at the Geraldton Landfill. All hazardous waste materials will be removed from the depots on September 9, and the depots will remain closed until next year.
The following designated materials will be accepted at the HHW depots, providing that they are identifiable (product labels are intact):
- oil containers & oil filters
- paints & coatings
- fertilizers & pesticides
- pressurized containers (eg. propane, aerosol cans, fire extinguishers)
- single-use dry cell batteries & rechargeable batteries
- solvents (eg. paint thinners)
- fluorescent light bulbs
Municipal Household Hazardous Waste events are coordinated in partnership with Stewardship Ontario, Recycling Council of Ontario, and the Product Care Association under the Waste Diversion Ontario program.
