The Long Lake Diversion

Presentation followed by a discussion of the Long Lake Diversion Longlac Sportsplex "In 1939, five companies banded together to complete Canada’s first inter-basin water transfer: forcing Long Lake to flow South into Lake Superior instead of North into the Arctic Ocean. With no environmental protection policies in place at the time, the project was profitable for the companies but left local communities with potentially long lasting negative environmental impacts. Today, inter-basin water transfer projects such as the Long Lake diversion are rare due to assessment policies aimed at minimizing damage to the environment and communities. It’s been nearly a century since the Long Lake Diversion and still no meaningful research has been done to assess the impacts the diversion has had on the environment."
