Recycling Info & Spring Clean Up Week

Recycling Information

Recycling depots for electronic waste are offered at the 4 municipal landfill sites, through the Municipality's registration with the Ontario Electronic Stewardship (visit www.recycleyourelectronics.ca). The Municipality is also registered as a tire collector with Ontario Tire Stewardship.

Scrap metal and large household appliances are accepted at the municipal landfills. Freon containing appliances require a tag that can be purchased at the municipal offices, for cost recovery of the tendered rate for inspection by a licensed technician.

Alkaline batteries can be recycled at Municipal Libraries throughout Greenstone, via the battery recycling program offered by Raw Materials Company Inc.  (Visit www.rawmaterials.com.)

The Municipality has entered into agreement with Stewardship Ontario, the Recycling Council of Ontario , and the Product Care Association to facilitate waste diversion efforts. Check out the Orange Drop Program to find businesses that participate in Return To Retail recycling programs for household hazardous waste.

Medications & Sharps Collection:  You can now return unused or expired medications and sharps for free to a pharmacy in your community.  For a list of collection locations near you or for more information about the program, CLICK HERE.

Recycling is growing in importance for everyone.  In Greenstone, distances to recycling facilities are a challenging factor in expanding our recycling program.  In anticipation of upcoming changes to waste diversion methods in Northern Ontario communities, the Municipality is prepared to discuss partnerships that would facilitate full-scale recycling.  Municipal waste management licensing and operations are regulated by the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change.  Consultation for future landfill developments is part of the Environmental Assessment Process.

Annual Spring Clean-Up:  May 30 to June 3, 2016

The Public Works Department offers residents curbside collection of special items, as per the Spring Clean Up Policy. Arrangements to pick up large items can be made by notifying the Public Services Department at 1-807-854-1100 ext 2029 or any Ward Office in advance of the designated Spring Clean Up week.

Household hazardous waste is not eligible for pickup - the Municipality offers a Household Hazardous Waste Collection program for proper disposal of hazardous materials.

*Refrigeration appliances must be marked with a sticker from either 1.) a certified technician declaring the Freon has been removed from the unit, or 2.) the Municipal Administration Office verifying payment of the disposal fee for the unit.
