2010 Geraldton Winter Carnival ~ March 12-13-14
Welcome to the Geraldton Winter Carnival Website. Your comments are always appreciated. Please drop us an email at recreation@greenstone.ca with your comments. Plans for the 3rd annual Geraldton Winter Carnival, set for March 11-12-13, 2011 will begin in December 2010.
A weekend such as this could not take place without the support of numerous volunteers in our community. Check out the list to the left - amazing!!!
Volunteers are always welcome. Anyone interested in participating in the winter carnival (joining our committee, sharing ideas for new events, organizing an event, earning high school community hours, participating in one of our many events, etc), can call the Recreation Office at 854-1102.

The 2nd annual Geraldton Winter carnival was a resounding success! In spite of the early spring thaw, attendance and participation was great. The opening ceremonies (MC Bob Curtis did a fantastic job!) on Friday March 12, announced the deserving winner of the Volunteer of the Award as Daniel Letourneau. Congratulations Daniel! The reining Carnival Queen, Heather Wobbe, returned to carry on the crown for another year. Congrats Heather! The minipops were amazing, keeping a packed audience entertained. Great job everyone! Following mini pops was the ever-popular Deal or No Deal. Daniel Letourneau did an incredible job as Howie, with the final winner turning out to be Colleen Mahoney (no, it was NOT fixed!).
New this year was kids’ games, face painting, prize bingo, pet photo contest and a photography contest. Special thanks to everyone who helped with the face painting (great job ladies!) and helped with the games and bingo. Thanks to everyone who entered the photo contests!
Another new addition to our carnival this year was “Geraldton’s Got Talent”, an entertaining variety show held on Saturday night, March 13. The audience (standing room only) was enthralled for almost 2 hours while our local talent showed us their stuff. Thanks to Dawn & Karmi Milne for all their organization and hard work, thanks to Paula & Cam O’Brien for bringing their equipment and giving the show the “professional touch”, and to everyone else who helped in any way. Special thanks to the performers for provided this outstanding entertainment; it’s amazing to see how much talent our little community holds!
After much nail biting and re-arranging of schedules, the 4 on 4 hockey tournament ended with success for Renee Couture’s team “Better Late than Never”. Congratulations, and thank you to all the teams for participating.
The High School Graduation Committee held a Fish Derby on Sunday, March 14 at Barton Bay Waterfront on Kenogamisis Lake. A total of 19 participants came out to enjoy the sunshine and support the 2010 Graduates. Congratulations everyone!
Only a few events had to be cancelled due to the lack of snow: cross country skiing, snow sculptures and team snowshoe races. The bonfire and tobogganing at blueberry hill, sponsored by Search & Rescue, was modified slightly, but everyone had fun.
Throughout the weekend, our community had a chance to vote for one of the 5 entries for the Geraldton Winter Carnival Mascot. The Mascot Winner was “Snow Shoe Sam”, drawn by Trevor Keller. Thank you to those who took the time to draw and enter a mascot, or cast a ballot.
Non-perishable food items were collected throughout the weekend, and were donated to the Greenstone Harvest Centre (food bank).
Thank you to all who donated either food or cash to this worthy cause.
Plans are under way to make the 3rd annual Geraldton Winter Carnival even bigger and better. The committee would like to thank everyone who participated, donated or helped out in any way. There are too many of you to mention ~ see you all next year!
