This route requires that a canoeist have at least intermediate skills due to the demanding nature of some of the portages and white water encountered along the trip. As you travel this historic voyageur route, you will be using traditional First Nations and voyageur portage trails connecting the labyrinth of rivers and lakes that make up this exhilarating adventure. You will encounter spectacular landscapes carved by glaciers, fish for the ever present walleye, view moose feeding on shoreline vegetation as you quietly paddle by, and sleep each night under a sky bursting with stars. | Wababimiga / Drowning River Canoe Route |

This route was made famous in the novel Traplines North which depicts the adventures of Lindsay Vanderbeck in the early 1900’s as he travels and traps in the area. Twentieth century travellers can still expect to encounter the same untouched wilderness with an abundance of wildlife. The fishing remains excellent along the route with Speckle Trout holding in the rivers while the Walleye flourish in the lakes. Paddlers will spend peaceful evenings sitting around the campfire in awe of the northern lights dancing across the horizon and tranquil days navigating the rivers and lakes lined with dense stands of emerald green spruce, common throughout the boreal forest. The trip will allow you to be in harmony with nature as you travel through the picturesque and breathtaking scenery of the Greenstone region.

Dickison Canoe Route takes 10 -12 days to complete. The Kenogamisis River Canoe Route, a portion of the Dickison Canoe Route takes only 1-2 days. Perfect for those individuals who desire a wilderness canoe adventure but don’t have the luxury of time. This route travels through secluded lakes and rivers that offer excellent Walleye and Speckled Trout fishing, wildlife viewing, and remnants of past logging and mining operations. Canoeists may choose to overnight along the route to allow time for exploring these opportunities or choose to complete the trip in approximately ten hours. Intermediate canoeing experience is recommended especially if you choose to navigate the white water.

This canoe route can offer both the intermediate and the advanced canoeist a challenging adventure along a historically significant fur trade route that finishes with a short paddle down the clear deep waters of Lake Nipigon. The more experienced canoeists may be inclined to feel the awesome power of the river and attempt to navigate the chutes and rapids that wind their way through the heart of the Canadian Shield. Those with less experience may choose to bypass the more difficult white water sections and use the maintained overland portages. Regardless of your experience level, the trip will allow you to unleash your adventurous spirit amidst the splendour and the challenges of the Greenstone region.

Canoeists interested in a wilderness adventure which incorporates history, wildlife viewing and exceptional fishing will find this trip particularly appealing. Your adventure takes place on land and water traditionally used by the Ojibway for hunting, fishing, and trapping over thousands of years. Steeped in history, the route offers the keen observer an opportunity to locate pictographs on the steep rocky shores of the deep blue lakes and wide flat rivers. The Woodland Caribou, a threatened species, can also be seen drinking at shores edge by the lucky canoeist. The majority of the route travels along lakes and rivers with minimal white water; however, a couple of difficult portages require that the canoeist have at least intermediate ability.
