The Municipality of Greenstone operates four municipal landfills that receive waste generated in Greenstone. You can access the landfills during regular hours of operation when a landfill attendant is on site to assist you. We provide recycling stations for electronics, scrap metal and tires at each of our three active sites. The Household Hazardous Waste and Paint Exchange Depot is open during the summer months at the Longlac landfill site.

Landfill tipping fees
Our municipal landfills are not equipped with weigh scales. If you are delivering a large volume of waste to be landfilled (more than a pick-up truck load), a fee will apply. If tipping fees are charged, the landfill attendant on site will prepare the charges and you will receive an invoice from the Municipality in the mail. There is no charge for dropping off materials we recycle.

Accepted waste
Our landfills are only authorized to accept solid non-hazardous municipal waste, as defined under Ontario Regulation 347 for Waste Management. We can accept:
- Regular household waste
- Construction debris
- Eligible commercial waste
- Some types of contaminated soil
- Recyclable Items: scrap metal, appliances, tires and electronic waste
- Household Hazardous Waste and paint-exchange program (ONLY during the seasonal operation of the Depots)
Contractors working on large projects or spill remediation should contact us to determine waste disposal criteria.
Please note that scavenging is strictly prohibited.
Fridges and other appliances that contain freon
To comply with landfill operating regulations that the Municipality must follow, fridges and other appliances with refrigerant materials are only accepted at our landfills if the appliance is:
- tagged by a licensed technician and certified Freon-free
- tagged with a "Greenstone Freon Appliance Tag" sticker
Where to buy freon tags
You can buy Freon tags at one of our Ward Offices for a fee. This fee helps us recover costs associated with removing these items from the landfill site for proper disposal.
Disposal of Sharps and Medications
Unused or expired medications and sharps should never be placed in the garbage. Sharps are a hazard to workers and the public visiting the landfill site, and medications can leach into our lakes and waterways. Protect our work and natural environment by returning unused or expired medication and used sharps for free to a local pharmacy. Find a drop-off location by using the map tool provided by Health Products Stewardship Association.
