Staff at the Municipality of Greenstone routinely conduct road patrols and monitor the weather to determine when to conduct winter maintenance for our roads. We maintain the roads by:
- Focusing efforts with the goal of plowing all streets within 24 hours of a snow event
- Sanding and/or salting icy surfaces when conditions require it
- Removing large snow piles on to maintain visibility when necessary and make space on municipal roads and boulevards
- Using different types of equipment depending on the type of maintenance required
Please note
All maintenance takes place after a snow or ice storm has ended. During prolonged weather events, service may take longer. It is important to remember to avoid travelling in bad weather unless absolutely necessary, and to drive carefully and according to weather and road conditions.
Priority areas and service standards
We prioritize snow plowing based on emergency service routes, traffic volumes and road use. Plowing is done in the following order of priority:
- Major arterial roads and bus routes
- Major collector roads and industrial areas
- Local residential streets
- Back laneways
For more information read By-Law 24-21 adopting the Minimum Maintenance Standards for Municipal Roads Policy.
What you can do to help
Please be patient while you wait for plows to get to your area and remember to give yourself extra time to get where you need to go. Follow these tips to help us increase service speed:
- Do not park on the street until we clear the snow
- Give snowplows plenty of room to clear
- Pile all snow from your driveway and sidewalks on your own property (it is illegal to push snow onto the road according to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act - section 181)
