By-laws are local rules made by the Municipality of Greenstone to address community-specific issues like zoning, noise, property maintenance, and animal control. They must be followed by all residents and property owners.
Council enacted the Clean Yards By-Law on January 15, 2024. The Clean Yards By-Law 24-04 outlines the general standards for all properties which includes:
- Grass Height: Owner and occupant shall keep the grass in the yard and on vacant property from exceeding 20 cm in height.
- Vegetation & Tree Care: Keep property free of noxious weeds, overgrown vegetation, and dead or dying trees, bushes, or shrubs. All trees should be pruned of dead branches.
- Waste and Littering: Yards must be kept free of waste (domestic, industrial, etc.), and any waste kept must be stored properly to prevent access to animals, birds, pests and to avoid any health, fire, or safety hazards.
- Derelict and Inoperative Vehicles: No storing of derelict or inoperative vehicles, machinery, boats, trailers etc. The storage in a yard is of a single vehicle which is fully and completely covered with a canvas or similar opaque, weather-resistant tarpaulin in good repair.
- Garbage Disposal
- Enclosed Containers: Household garbage must be stored in an enclosed container with a tight-fitting lid to keep animals (like birds and bears) out.
- Clean Up: If wildlife does get into your garbage, it’s your responsibility to clean it up. Preventing access to garbage is key in maintaining cleanliness and reducing the risk of attracting pests or animals.
- Drainage and Storm Water: Water from downspouts, sump pumps, or similar sources must be managed to:
- Stay within the property until absorbed or drained properly.
- Avoid discharge onto highways, sidewalks, or stairs.
- Prevent entry into sanitary sewers.
- Not flow onto neighboring properties unless part of a shared drainage system.
Keeping your yard clean isn’t just about following rules - it’s about contributing to the overall health and aesthetic of the neighborhood. A well-maintained property reflects care and respect for your community and helps to promote safety and enjoyment for everyone.
