Third-Party Advertisers

Who must register?

You must register as a third party advertiser if you are an Ontario resident, corporation or trade union that will incur expenses for advertisements related to:

• Promotion (television, radio, print and digital)
• Support or opposition of a candidate
• "yes" or a "no" question on a ballot

If want to advertise in more than one municipality, you will have to register in each municipality.

This does not include:

• An advertisement under the direction of a candidate
• When no expenses are incurred by the person/entity for an advertisement
• When advertising is transmitted by an individual to employees, by a corporation to its shareholders, directors, members, or employees or by a trade union to its members or employees
• Advertising that does not cost money to post or to broadcast (for example: comments on social media)

Who cannot register?

You are not able to register as a third party advertiser if you are:

• A municipal candidate whose nomination has been filed under section 33
• A federal political party registered under the Canada Elections Act (Canada)
• A federal constituency association
• A registered candidate at a federal election endorsed by that party
• A provincial political party, constituency association, registered candidate or leadership contestant registered under the Election Finances Act
• The Crown in right of Canada or Ontario, a municipality or local board

How to register

You must register with the Clerk at the Municipality of Greenstone between the first day of filing nominations, and the Friday before voting day in a regular election.

Fee

There is no fee associated with registering.

Approval

The Clerk must examine the registration and certify if the notice of registration is compliant.
